How to Spot a Real Amazon Black Friday Deal (and Skip the Fake Ones)

Not every "deal" badge is a deal. A few quick checks will tell you whether a Black Friday price is genuinely low or just looks low, so you spend less and regret fewer purchases.

The 5-minute deal check

  1. Look at the price history. Free price trackers show what an item has actually sold for over the past months. If today's "deal" matches the usual price, it's not a deal.
  2. Ignore the "list price." The crossed-out price is often a price almost nobody paid. Compare against the typical selling price instead.
  3. Check the exact model number. Some sale items are cheaper versions made for the sale, with fewer features than the model you researched.
  4. Check who sells and ships it. "Ships from and sold by Amazon" or a well-known brand store is the safest. Be careful with unknown third-party sellers at very low prices.
  5. Read recent reviews. Sort by most recent. A product can change quietly while old 5-star reviews stay on the page.

Common deal traps

What usually has the best Black Friday prices

Historically, the biggest real discounts tend to show up on Amazon's own devices, small kitchen appliances, robot vacuums, headphones and smart home gear. Everyday basics like cables and storage bins are often just as cheap any other week.

Common questions

When does Amazon Black Friday start?

Amazon usually starts early Black Friday deals in the weeks before Thanksgiving, with the biggest wave from Black Friday through Cyber Monday.

How do I know if an Amazon deal is real?

Check the item's price history with a free price tracker. If the sale price is not clearly below its usual selling price over recent months, it is not a real deal.

Are Black Friday deals better than Prime Day?

They are often similar. Amazon devices and some electronics may hit their lowest prices in either event, so compare price history instead of trusting the label.
